May Contest 2006

DR 2 X
in JO4Øql on 144.355 MHz

In March we had no chance to get to the QTH because in the days before the contest we had fresh snow which added up to more than half a meter.  After a long winter we enjoyed a nice weekend in spring on the courtyside. It would have been ideal if there were not so much wind, but that would be too much to expect from contest weather...

There was not too much special about this contest. The conditions seemed just to be average. No QSOs above 900km were logged. Only the QSOs rates were high. In the first hour we started with 111 QSOs, it also went well in the second hour but then we got in serious trouble with one of our neighbours: A noise floor on the whole band up to S9! No chance to log any DX. When they turned the antenna again, it was fine...  This seems to be the most serious problem in contesting in our days. It only apears if the signals are very strong. Mostly the origin is the exciter. The phase noise of the PLL is just too high. We hope they find a solution till July. Anyway we could get to the agreement that they keep beaming in other directions. That way QSO-rates kept high even during the night. They did not drop below 12 QSO per hour. That is quite unusual at average conditions. Our advantage in May is that there is no contest in G, because the take-off in that direction is not excellent. This way we had the chance to have slightly higher QSO-rates than our compeditors.

Thanks to everyone calling us!  See you in July...
