July Contest 2004

What is wrong??  This year's sporadic E season started really late and there were only a few openings so far. The summer also missed it's startpoint. It was more like a March Contest: Cold around 10°C and rain nearly all the time. We just arrived at the location around 7 o'clock on saturday morning and it started to rain. After waiting for two hours inside the car we decided not to put up the big antenna (8*6ele). What else could we do??  Only use one antenna?  What stuff do we have with us to get another small antenna system up? As we have a Flamex-Pull tower with a hight of 10m mounted in the van, that is the alternative. As Antenna we just took half of the big one: 4*6ele DJ9BV. It took a long time to get the antennas set up because we were looking for wholes in the sky without rain. So finally we had two similar systems of 4*6ele each at 12 o'clock local time running. Excellent we could start to "clean up" our frequency! Conditions seemed to be really bad. Nothing more than local stations and the frequency was clear till 14 UTC. It started quite well in the first 20 minutes but QRM was getting heavier soon. One of the big contest stations from OK located in JO60 was just 1.5 kHz up. Why? I think it is most important to check frequency and we were on the air on the QRG for more than three hours....  No chance for us to reach the 100 QSOs in the first hour. It looked not too well till 22:26UTC when F6FZS/p IN93 called. Wow 1100km via tropo! But no one else from this direction till the late morning two EAs called. The QSO rates were quite usual but the average distance was quite good. Our alternative setup seemed to work quite well. In the end we had 983 valid QSOs.
After the contest we compared the two systems with 4*6ele each. They were nearly the same while observing beacons. During the last contests we could observe higher signal levels with the 8*6ele. We have to discuss if we will get the big one up again.
Conditions were not only up to EA but also to G. As stations in our neighbourhood reported they worked IO80. Nothing from our location with bad take off to the west but more Gs than usual. Also worked a lot of OKs. Good activity this time also from OZ, but we missed some Italiens.
Over all a nice result but really bad weather! Just when we started to put down the antenna it started raining again. So the picture of the team had to be taken below a tree. Another problem during the night was the breakdown of the rotator of the antenna on the van. We could not fix it but we were glad that it is possible to turn the whole tower.
Next event will we September because of a lack of operators in August. Hope we get enough people operating than.
